What We Do
Our Agencies
The United Way of Selma and Dallas County provides funding to support our community’s most important social service agencies. All of the money that is raised here stays here. The following is a list of agencies we fund at your United Way:
American Red Cross

The American Red Cross sponsors local blood drives and provides disaster relief, CPR and first aid training, and lifeguard certification. In addition, the Red Cross helps senior citizens in need to pay their utility bills through Project SHARE.
Cahaba Center for Mental Health

The Cahaba Center for Mental Health provides a safe, caring, and structured environment for mentally ill and mentally retarded individuals as they strive to reach their full potential. The Center’s programs include the Early Intervention Program for physically and mentally challenged infants and toddlers up to age 3 as well as the Adult Activity Center, substance abuse counseling and prevention, and Special Olympics.
Special Pre-School Program

The Special Pre-School Program is administered by the West Central Alabama Rehabilitation Center and takes up where the Early Intervention Program leaves off. The goal of this program is to get these special young people ready for the public school system.
Crippled Children and Adults Association (Easter Seals Society)

The Crippled Children and Adults Association is also administered by the West Central Alabama Rehabilitation Center. This program rehabilitates and trains developmentally disabled individuals as they prepare to join the workforce.
Tukabatchee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America

The Tukabatchee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America provides scouts with safe, productive, structured activities outside of school hours and focuses on character development and values-based leadership training.
Salvation Army

The Salvation Army works to meet the needs of our community and stands ready to provide emergency assistance to individuals and their families.
Bosco Food Center

The Bosco Food Center provides a hot lunch to the hungry every day of the year.
SABRA Sanctuary

South Central Alabama Girl Scout Council

The South Central Alabama Girl Scout Council is helping today’s girls to become tomorrow’s leaders through safe, productive, and structured activities.
YMCA – Grist Branch

The YMCA works to meet the health and social service needs of the men, women, and children of our community. This branch offers scholarships for underprivileged individuals and families.
YMCA – Brown Branch

The YMCA works to meet the health and social service needs of the men, women, and children of our community. This branch provides scholarships to more than 90% of its members.
Selma Youth Development Center

The Selma Youth Development Center reaches out to the most troubled youth of our community and provides a safe place for children and young people to study dance, practice boxing, enjoy arts and crafts and participate in many other activities that would otherwise be unavailable.
Literacy Program

The Literacy Program is administered by the Public Library and funds from this program are used to buy new children’s books and adult education materials for the library.
Sickle Cell Disease Association

The Sickle Cell Disease Association tests children for the sickle cell disease and trait and provides counseling to children and their parents.
Selma AIR

Selma AIR works to educate people about HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. They also provide assistance to those living with the disease.
Selma Area Food Bank

The Selma Area Food Bank gathers and distributes food to churches and meal programs throughout our community.
